Silver candlesticks from Lyppens jewellers

A silver candlestick or a set of candlesticks are a traditional gift for a wedding but also a great gift for a birthday, anniversary or as a gift to a business associate. They can be personalised by engraving them with a (wedding) date, name or any other personal message. A candlestick is a great way to dress up any table.

History of the candlestick

It is very difficult to know when the earliest candlesticks were made as candles are believed to have been used as early as 3000 BC by the ancient Egyptians. The modern silver candlesticks that served as tableware as both decorative and practical started to become commonplace in the early 17th century during the reign of Charles Ist. Elaborate and grand designs were made throughout the 18th and 19th centuries with candelabras (more arms) often serving as decorative and conversation pieces alongside their practical function.

With the invention of the lightbulb in the 1870’s the candlestick gradually became less of a practical necessity and more a decorative item.

Lyppens jewellers still today produces its own candlesticks in two models known as fillet edge and pearl edge. These models are available in different sizes and can be engraved. Alongside there is a great collection of 19th and 20th century candlesticks and candelabras and also a selection of Menorahs.
